Laurie McKenna

Born: July 7, 1963

In 2002, Laurie McKenna moved  from Cambridge, Massachusetts to Bisbee, Arizona.  Laurie is a cross disciplinary artist (2-d, spoken word, installation, filmmaking)  whose work examines class, socio-economics, and power imbalances.  Laurie combines and distills  US history, personal experience and bereft and dispossessed cultural narratives. With funding from The Arizona Commission on the Arts, she is continuing her work on her project “The Undesirables”, which examines the 1917 labor tragedy, the Bisbee Deportation.

While working on the project she became a part of the film Bisbee '17 directed by Robert Greene.

From 2007 to the 2014 she worked on “Rock Paper Fence” a project responding to and documenting fatal shootings of “rock throwers” by Border Patrol agents along the border.  The work involves extensive research into gun culture, racism, and the history of the security industry in the US.

Laurie holds studied performance art  and Film and hods a BFA in Filmmaking from Mass College of Art. She lives in Double Adobe and is the Executive Director of the nonprofit arts cooperative Central School Project in Bisbee, Arizona.
